Speed Training: Running Faster

Speed is almost everything in any sporting event.

How many times have you seen faster, quicker players make the difference during crunch time in any highly competitive game? How many times have you witnessed a more agile player provide the winning edge for the team?

The answer is many times, more often than you dare to count.

There’s an old belief that speed in an inborn athletic quality and one sport attribute which can not be developed or trained in an athlete.

But this belief is a misleading notion. You can be a faster, quicker, and more agile athlete – the secret is speed training.

Speed training is a course of speed training modules designed to make an athlete run faster, move quicker, and be more agile.

There are three basic aspects which are most important in any speed training:

1. Speed – Speed is defined as “the ability to reach a high velocity of movement in whatever mode of locomotion – running, cycling, skating, and swimming.” In sports such as running and swimming, speed is crucial. Therefore, speed training in these sports is a fundamental part of the overall training
process.

2. Agility – Agility, on the other hand, refers to “the ability to explosively brake, change direction and accelerate again.” Football and basketball are two sports where agile players are important. Speed training to develop agility in these sports is also an integral part of the training and allows the athletes to apply agility in any given game setting.

3. Speed endurance – It refers to the ability of an athlete to “maintain a high velocity for longer than 6 seconds or produce repeated sprints with minimal rest periods in between.”

Speed training is a way to step up your game and achieve peak performance. An athlete who can increase speed at any time or can change direction at will has a big winning advantage against a competitor.

Speed Training: Stepping It Up

What is speed? Is it simply running fast?

Speed can be defined as the “quickness of movement of a limb” and it can be stated as “maximum speed, elastic strength (power) and speed endurance.”

So how will you develop speed? Some say either you have it or you don’t…but is that really true?
Speed training can help you step up your game to the next level! Maybe some athletes are born with speed but that doesn’t mean a thing! You can train hard and achieve peak performance.

Here are some speed training drills will help you become faster, more agile, and stronger:

1. Short hill work can help you with your stride frequency and arm action, and can enhance your straight ahead running speed.

2. Ball drop drill can improve your reaction time and work on acceleration mechanics at the same time.

3. Weave in/weave out drill will improve your agility.

4. Drill with alternating strides will develop foot coordination and speed.

5. Ladder drills can also help you develop your foot coordination and speed.

Speed in Sports
