Going Up For Exercise

If you are looking for an easy and inexpensive workout routine, would you believe that running up the stairs can help you achieve that? Running up the stairs is a good cardiovascular exercise – gets your heart pumping and strengthening your lung capacity.

However, with the post 9/11 security policies, most high-rise stairwells are closed for public use except in case of emergencies. Although there is no general policy on stairwell use and security in New York, the companies and building owners make their own autonomous decisions.

Dr. Cedric Bryant, the chief science officer for the American Council on Exercise, says that walking up the stairs at a moderate pace can typically burn, on average, five calories a minute for a 120-lb person, seven for a 150-lb person, and nine for 180-lb person. The number of calories burned is proportional to the weight of the person.

If you are an overweight person, a regular and moderate stairwell routine can help you lose weight without too much stress and is a great exercise to couple your healthy diet.

However, there are also others who made the stairwell a competition ground. At the annual Empire State Building Run-Up, stairwell enthusiasts from all over the world attend the famous event to compete.

There are so many ways where you can burn calories and define your muscles – all without a single cent taken out of your pocket! You can always find better and better ways to take your athletic performance to the next level.
